Putin is an evil dictator but there have already been about 15,000 deaths and many more injuries. We should have pushed the Ukrainians to offer Russia the parts of where the majority of the people prefer to be part of Russia plus neutrality and no entrance to NATO. If he refused that then we have to support the war. Further Putin though an evil dictator unlike the communists in the old USSR allows people to live fairly normal lives as long as they stay away from politics and there is hope for change from within. As the US Government learned in Afghanistan, Governing a place were the people hate you is often not beneficial in the modern world, so Ukraine may make problems for Russia if they try to dominate it.

Drug prohibition - it seems to me that the illegality of drugs though it may reduce recreational drug use a little on net is a negative. The war on drugs has been destructive to parts of Latin America and in parts of the country here. I think we should try legalizing the sale so users can be assured of some level of constancy in the supply. Hopefully that will reduce accidental overdose. Drug OD deaths are now over 100,000 per year and they have been doubling each decade at least since 1980, and some researchers say since 1940.

Euclidean zoning - Euclidean zoning allows people to stop building for frivolous reasons like increased traffic and neighborhood character. It is a denial of the right to build and develop and has driven housing costs up in the most desirable parts of the USA. It has contributed to homelessness particularly in west coast cities. The incentives being what they are in local politics, I think the Federal government needs to make it illegal.

Crime - Crime is mostly a local issue but, the US murder rate is much higher than other developed countries, and we have an example of how to reduce it in New York city were crime is much lower than it used to be. There is a debate about the importance of "stop and frisk" in New York's success, was mainly due to a reduction in corruption in the police force and how much if any of the reduction was due to immigration.

Medical insurance reform - the federal government pays for about 65% of healthcare in the US but Medicine is mostly regulated at the state and local level. That creates some undesirable incentives. So I think we should transfer more of the regulation of healthcare to the federal Government, or make the system more incentive compatible by having the Federal Government give the money that it would spent on healthcare to the states with the requirement that the cover people who are now on Medicare, the lowest income citizens (current on Medicaid) and all Federal government employees. The states can spend it in the most efficient way and if some money is left spend it on what they like. I've written about that and some other possible reforms.

Medicare reform - if we do not do the above we should have Medicare stop paying for stuff that the UK's MHS does not provide. That is care that has not shown a positive net benefit to cost from what I've read that seems to be at least 20% of Medicare spending. I've written about other reforms that might help reduce costs.

Social Security reform - The system should stop giving COLA raises to the higher lifetime earners until all recipients receive the same payment in retirement. The system in Australia works that way, for the Government part of pensions, every retiree gets the same amount. It is and should a program to prevent the elderly from falling into poverty.

To me the issues we focus most on like immigration are problems but not as big as the above. Inflation has been a problem for the last few years but seems to be under control now.

JWOhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00004178958481335795noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1294000140149887671.post-12183548163807756842024-01-25T07:40:00.000-08:002024-01-25T08:38:35.112-08:00A Compromise with Drug Law Supporters
As a compromise with drug law supporters, I have begun to propose that we legalize the sale of all drugs, to make the supply safer, but make the use of certain recreational drugs without a prescription illegal. This would be to reduce the collateral damage from drug use, including spouse abuse and child abuse and street crime. That way if someone calls the police because a drugged up guy in behaving bad, the police can arrest and jail him and it is an easier conviction.

I would say that they could then force him into treatment but from the evidence that I've seen forced treatment doesn't work. Of course in the future it might and so we should keep it as an option.
JWOhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00004178958481335795noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1294000140149887671.post-39953119774882376262024-01-25T07:38:00.000-08:002024-01-25T07:38:29.019-08:00A UBI Design Again
I support a $260/week UBI given to all US citizens over 18 years old but it would replace TANF, SNAP, minimum wage laws, housing subsidies etc. and yes Social Security also. There would no longer be a reason to have those programs if we had a UBI. And I think giving more money to parents for there children would dangerous in that a very few but not 0 might have children that they neglect to get more money and that would look bad for the UBI and in fact be bad. Children are already subsidized through schools and free lunch programs and charities like to help children and the UBI would make the problem of child poverty small enough that charity could cover it. I would also start taxing the 1st dollar earned at 33% instead of 15.2%. The tax rate/bracket could lowered once income goes about enough to pay for the UBI ($40,969.70/year).

If it reduces would too much a work requirement can be added.
JWOhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00004178958481335795noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1294000140149887671.post-60172428035619403412024-01-08T11:20:00.000-08:002024-01-08T11:20:50.168-08:00Factors in Increase in Homelessness
What has contributed to the increase in homelessness in the USA

One factor seems to be deinstitutionalization of the mentally ill.

From google AI: “Studies from the late 1980s suggest that homelessness is related to deinstitutionalization”

Another factor especially on the west coast is the increase in voters ability to block the rights of land owners to build for frivolous reasons like increased traffic, neighborhood character etc. See Euclidian zoning.

Which BTW is an extreme form of democracy. It is related to Social Democracy which is a system where workers and citizens get to vote on much more. In a socialist Democracy employees would get to vote on how corporations are run and voters in an are would get to vote on what gets built and much more.

Another factor is the reduction of police power and courts standing up for the rights of those who end up homeless who might in an earlier time been put in jail. One might look at this as a good thing but can lead to more people living on the streets.

Homelessness is a common problem now in most developed countries. Japan seems have overcome it by putting zoning in control of the national government. Seems to me that this should not be such a big deal and I think at $100/ton it might be enough to remove CO2 from the air.

People would not end up paying that much as electric Companies would produce more not CO2 producing methods and Petroleum prices would be lower than they'd otherwise be and people would tend to buy vehicles that get higher mileage.
JWOhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00004178958481335795noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1294000140149887671.post-30065609809980532272023-10-05T11:33:00.003-07:002023-10-05T11:35:31.873-07:00Better than MMT
My comments on this MMT video.

I'm one of the few Libertarians who think MMT would no be bad. It would not change much.

MMT does not say deficits do not matter it says that they can cause inflation and that would require cutting spending and/or raising taxes. To understand this it good to think not about money, but about goods and services.

So if you do a Green New Deal and it draws resources away from more productive uses to less productive uses, that is waste, which is why instead of Green New Deal, a CO2 tax and a payout for the removal of CO2 from the air would be a better than an MMT funded Green New Deal.

In fact we already have a mini Green New Deal new in the form of CAFE standards. The paragraph below shows how poorly it works:

"I and other scientists at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology estimate that the new standards will cost the economy on the whole — for the same reduction in gas use — at least six times more than a federal gas tax of roughly 45 cents per dollar of gasoline. That is because a gas tax provides immediate, direct incentives for drivers to reduce gasoline use, while the efficiency standards must squeeze the reduction out of new vehicles only. The new standards also encourage more driving, not less."

So that's a huge waste of the scarcest resource, human effort.

A function of taxes not mentioned in the video, is to let voters know, as much as possible, how much Government functions are costing. You could for that purpose do the opposite of MMT and insist that all government be funded through taxes and let the Federal Reserve provide all the money to the economy even if the need to keep interest rates at 0% forever and even buy assets in down turns. I think that I would prefer that to MMT because the incidence of Government spending does fall on the citizen, all of it and they should know that as much as possible.
JWOhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00004178958481335795noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1294000140149887671.post-8417975274616537622023-09-08T08:10:00.002-07:002023-09-08T08:10:45.629-07:00From ChatGPT Income Quintiles and Church Attendance
This is ChatGPT's answer to:<span style="color: #111111; font-family: -apple-system, Roboto, SegoeUI, "Segoe UI", "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, "Microsoft YaHei", "Meiryo UI", Meiryo, "Arial Unicode MS", sans-serif; font-size: 14px;"> In the USA people from which
income quintile are most likely to attend church regularly.

<span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0.7); color: #111111; font-family: -apple-system, Roboto, SegoeUI, "Segoe UI", "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, "Microsoft YaHei", "Meiryo UI", Meiryo, "Arial Unicode MS", sans-serif; font-size: 16px;">According to the web search results, people from the<span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0.7); color: #111111; font-family: -apple-system, Roboto, SegoeUI, "Segoe UI", "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, "Microsoft YaHei", "Meiryo UI", Meiryo, "Arial Unicode MS", sans-serif; font-size: 16px;"> <span style="color: #111111; font-family: -apple-system, Roboto, SegoeUI, "Segoe UI", "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, "Microsoft YaHei", "Meiryo UI", Meiryo, "Arial Unicode MS", sans-serif; font-size: var(--cib-type-subtitle2-stronger-font-size); font-variation-settings: var(--cib-type-subtitle2-stronger-font-variation-settings); font-weight: var(--cib-type-subtitle2-stronger-font-weight); line-height: var(--cib-type-subtitle2-stronger-line-height);">highest income quintile<span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0.7); color: #111111; font-family: -apple-system, Roboto, SegoeUI, "Segoe UI", "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, "Microsoft YaHei", "Meiryo UI", Meiryo, "Arial Unicode MS", sans-serif; font-size: 16px;"> <span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0.7); color: #111111; font-family: -apple-system, Roboto, SegoeUI, "Segoe UI", "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, "Microsoft YaHei", "Meiryo UI", Meiryo, "Arial Unicode MS", sans-serif; font-size: 16px;">are most likely to attend church regularly in the USA. Take homeowners in San Francisco who think driving a few marginal people into homelessness is an acceptable price to pay to retain the character of their neighborhoods and keep their home values rising. Unions keep their income up and often become exclusive to the point where a job seeker needs pull to get a union job. Business owners will do the same when they have a chance, I'm sure that real-estate companies mainly in the business of owning rental properties vote with home owners to restrict building but they are few and they are counterbalanced by builders who want to build more. It is diversity that is a big benefit of economic freedom.
JWOhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00004178958481335795noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1294000140149887671.post-68183568045176162882022-10-20T11:39:00.001-07:002023-01-26T09:26:58.604-08:00The Kind of Racism I See
This is a response to David Henderson's blog post here:

Is Nikole Hannah-Jones Right?

This is kind of racism that I think really exists. Another example is the rate that young black men are being murdered in St Louis is very high and if the victims (and perps) were white we would be doing more about it.

Another little thing, I watch some basketball and track videos on youtube and youtube seems to offer a disproportionate amount of Larry Byrd, Pete Maravich, Matthew Boling, even Mac McClung (he's done little to earn that notoriety so far). The idea of a great white hope lives.

So people seem to think in racial lines, and if they are white like to see a white guy do well.

Part of it might be an underdog effect, like my mother told me her family loved to see Joe Lewis do well, seeing a poor black man beat the supposedly superior race. If there are no or few black doing well in a field people might cheer more for them.

How destructive the above racism is another question.
JWOhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00004178958481335795noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1294000140149887671.post-89023443855595837452022-10-20T11:38:00.003-07:002023-01-26T09:27:33.909-08:00The Strong Desire to Blame a Human
The strong desire to blame a human is something to be resisted.

This applies to:

Opioids Purdue Pharma the Sackler family.

White USAers blacks, black USAers whites

Jobs immigrants

Fentanyl China

Covid also China

Medical care insurance companies/drug companies

And of course much more.

JWOhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00004178958481335795noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1294000140149887671.post-32420182362626364272022-10-20T11:36:00.009-07:002023-01-19T11:51:54.953-08:00Medical Things that Blacks Outperform Whites On
<span class="css-901oao css-16my406 r-poiln3 r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0" face="TwitterChirp, -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, "Segoe UI", Roboto, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif" style="border: 0px solid black; box-sizing: border-box; display: inline; font-stretch: inherit; font-variant-east-asian: inherit; font-variant-numeric: inherit; line-height: inherit; margin: 0px; min-width: 0px; overflow-wrap: break-word; padding: 0px; white-space: pre-wrap;">According to the CDC here (<span class="css-901oao css-16my406 r-poiln3 r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0" face="TwitterChirp, -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, "Segoe UI", Roboto, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif" style="border: 0px solid black; box-sizing: border-box; display: inline; font-stretch: inherit; font-variant-east-asian: inherit; font-variant-numeric: inherit; line-height: inherit; margin: 0px; min-width: 0px; overflow-wrap: break-word; padding: 0px; white-space: pre-wrap;">See <span class="css-901oao css-16my406 r-poiln3 r-b88u0q r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0" face="TwitterChirp, -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, "Segoe UI", Roboto, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif" style="border: 0px solid black; box-sizing: border-box; display: inline; font-stretch: inherit; font-variant-east-asian: inherit; font-variant-numeric: inherit; line-height: inherit; margin: 0px; min-width: 0px; overflow-wrap: break-word; padding: 0px; white-space: pre-wrap;">table<span class="css-901oao css-16my406 r-poiln3 r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0" face="TwitterChirp, -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, "Segoe UI", Roboto, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif" style="border: 0px solid black; box-sizing: border-box; display: inline; font-stretch: inherit; font-variant-east-asian: inherit; font-variant-numeric: inherit; line-height: inherit; margin: 0px; min-width: 0px; overflow-wrap: break-word; padding: 0px; white-space: pre-wrap;"> 2 page 9), at 31 weeks or less gestation black infant mortality is lower than for whites so it might be hard to change. Texas is extremely old, it's history goes back centuries. The name is Spanish and it was at one point part of the Spanish Empire and then independent Mexico. The indigenous people of the region were dominated by the fairly violent Comanches who were a persistent thorn in the side of both the Spanish and the Mexicans. Conflict between whites and natives long predates 1836. Some of the land confiscated seems to have been done before independent Texas.

When Mexico became independent they encouraged "Anglo" migration in part for economic reasons but also to counter the Comanches. Indeed, for as much as you may decry American treatment of indigenous peoples, of which there is much to decry, Mexico was fighting them until the 1930s when the American Indian wars were in effect closed by about 1890(a few minor raids happened after, but historians generally say the war was over in 1890). I've never really understood how the nations of Latin America have seemingly gotten a pass on their treatment of natives and land rights but my guess is that populations are just much more mixed so blame is harder to pinpoint.

On the issue of land and how it was acquired it should be acknowledged that while some land was taken via conquest or illegally seized in defiance of treaties from natives, an enormous amount of the American West and even colonial lands were simply purchased at prices natives willingly accepted absent military threat. I've read that about $800 million was spent by the Federal government alone from independence until around the end of the 19th century. Thats quit a bit more than was spent on Louisiana($15 million), Alaska($7.2 million), Gadsden ($10 million), Florida($5 million) and Mexico(even after the War the USA still paid them $15 million) combined.

From the column. "The book proudly defends the broader sweep of Texas history, including the taking of Texas from Mexico and then the absorption of Texas into the United States"

Thats a strange way of saying "Texas declared independence, later to voluntarily join the USA". Mexico under Santa Anna was headed toward military dictatorship and in many ways was already there. A number of other Mexican states were also in open rebellion under his rule. In the long run the history of Mexico makes it clear that leaving was the best route for Texas both economically and politically. The Mexican revolution(1 million+ dead) was perhaps more deadly than the American Civil War(~750K dead) and that was just one of many internal military conflicts they suffered, to say nothing of their lack of true democracy until 2000.

I think Texas has an interesting history, perhaps they need to tone it down with their state pride, they share many of the serious issues both the nation had in general, and the CSA in particular. Overall, not a bad column, I guess. Its just always surprising to see someone like Tyler, who is generally libertarian and usually pro-America embrace the more critical and revisionist historical take on the USA. Self reflection is good, but it has gotten to the point of self hatred in too many quarters.

JWOhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00004178958481335795noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1294000140149887671.post-19170818192551184142022-09-23T11:15:00.002-07:002023-10-27T09:42:16.636-07:00The Decline in the Male Employment Rate

This has been an Econ topic of discussion the last few day:

Larry Summers: There is some social phenomenon which I suspect explains non work, non marriage, deaths of despair, general alienation and, I suspect, the rise of reactionary populism. It should be a major task of social science to understand it.

It seems like these are caused by the obvious things but that no one wants to acknowledge.

Non-work: Smaller and more affluent families are more willing and able to support a non-worker. Also black males have become a larger part of the population and at least since the 1960 have had a more sensible (Keynesian 15 hour work week) view of work leisure balance.

Marriage: The most obvious reason for fall in marriage/rise single motherhood stands, women have better options now than staying with less desirable men.

I was talking to group of committed Christians recently and I mentioned that today if a girl gets pregnant people say she not make a second mistake, and surprisingly to me, they agreed that shoe shouldn't.

Even very religious people want their daughters to go to college, and not just to meat a nice husband but to build a career.

Deaths of despair: Deaths of despair is IMHO a myth. While it's true that WV was number one in opioid deaths New Hampshire was number two. We should admit that some people really love to get high, some more that life itself. Robin Hanson has noted that drug overdoes deaths have doubled each decade at least since 1970 and maybe 1940.
JWOhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00004178958481335795noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1294000140149887671.post-83583873241275012682022-09-16T11:09:00.000-07:002022-09-16T11:09:09.193-07:00James Kwak - Economism Should We Let Lawyers Run the Economy

Law professor James Kwak coined the term economism, contending that economists have too much influence in policy.

It's often much more lucrative to be one of the smartest plumbers around, who can run a business, than an average person in a job that requires a college degree.

Also, tuition rates in state schools is a state issue but with more financial aid maybe it should be higher, that is the affluent should pay the full costs of college, which BTW are amazingly high. Spending on college by states and students can and should be cut. Florida spends much less per student year than most states and so there is a model to follow.
JWOhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00004178958481335795noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1294000140149887671.post-2584013188666744802022-09-06T12:29:00.006-07:002022-09-06T12:29:57.679-07:00Social Security Beginnings
Links:

Why Is Social Security Regressive by Chris Pope.

The Twilight of Social Insurance also by Chris Pope

Both discus the beginnings of Social Security and how we arrived at the odd structure.
JWOhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00004178958481335795noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1294000140149887671.post-69486344034754235672022-09-06T12:25:00.000-07:002022-09-06T12:25:28.677-07:00Some States spend Double what other state spend without noticeable Differences
Some states:

Look at Florida in figure 10 here, for education.
